But ultimately, he couldn't bring himself to let go of Jessie. So, he opted for a diplomatic approach. “Let's just stay friends, Debra."
After dropping Debra off, Axell dialed Jessie's number as soon as he got back in the car.
Jessie had just finished her shower when Axell's call came in.
Not wanting to disturb her mom, she stepped outside with her phone, asking softly, “How's work? Are you feeling tired?"
Thinking about the awkwardness at Debra's party, Axell felt a pang of guilt.

"I'm just about to hit the hay," Jessie replied.
Hearing Jessie's voice, Axell softened. "I'll make more time for us.

Jessie managed a faint smile.
She chose to trust Axell. They bid each other good night and hung up.
As Jessie headed back to her apartment, she spotted someone crouched in the corner of the hallway.

Taken aback, she approached cautiously, even flicking on the corridor light for a better look. Yep, it was Jeslyn.
Hands on her hips, Jessie demanded, “What are you doing here, Jeslyn?
Who sent you?"
Jeslyn just stared back, refusing to speak.
"If you won't talk, I'll have to send you back immediately," Jessie warned sternly.
After Jessie had said her piece, Jeslyn looked up at her with those large, watery eyes that seemed to plead for sympathy.
Jessie, however, was not moved to pity.
