Chapter: 4041
The car window rolled up.
Alexis slowly disengaged herself from Leonel. Before starting the car, he turned his head to her and said in a low voice, “What? Pulling away right after you're done using me? You acted very differently in front of your dad."
Alexis gave him a fake smile and answered, "And you played along."
Leonel shut his mouth and said nothing more. Their children were in the car, and he didn't want to argue in front of them.
He drove the kids to school, and then headed to Alexis' law firm.
The car stopped in front of the building, but before Alexis could get out, Leonel held her hand and said, "I have a business dinner scheduled tonight, so I can't pick up the kids after school. Can you pick them up and take them to eat somewhere? I'll come get you as soon as my appointment is finished."
Alexis nodded. "Okay. You don't have to come if it gets too late. I can just drive us all home."
Leonel's face darkened.
There was a brief pause before he breached the problem that lingered in the air between them. "Alexis, I swear nothing happened last night."
She only smiled at him.
Call it a wife's intuition. She knew better than anyone when he was lying. If nothing had happened, why was he so hell-bent on explaining himself? The Leonel she knew would just impatiently say, "Can you drop it? How can I admit to something I didn't do?"
Alexis got out of the car and went inside the office. Soon, her assistant came up to her and discussed the case.
Inside the car, Leonel watched her receding figure quietly. She seemed to be in higher spirits the moment she stepped out of the car.
Perhaps this was really the life she wanted...
Evelyn's birth hadn't really been planned, and they later decided to have Daniel for her because she was gravely sick. Alexis had probably long lost her feelings for Leonel. She wouldn't have married him if not for the kids.
To her, she was simply tolerating their set-up, which was why she was blind to his pain.
Leonel had a lot of work, but he stayed inside the car, smoking two cigarettes. As he blew out smoke, he contemplated his marriage with Alexis.
At half past nine, his phone rang with a call from his secretary.
She urged him to go to the company, reminding him of the matters he had to deal with.
Thus, Leonel began another hectic day.
