Feeling the weight of their gazes, Rosalynn cursed Brian inwardly.

“Mr. Hughes, the reward you gave me is too precious. It would be more suitable for collection than everyday use," Rosalynn answered, trying to discreetly clarify that the jewelry was nothing but a bonus-some form of recognition for a job well done. It didn't go beyond that.

“You don't have to hold back. Just use it. I can always get you another one if it breaks," Brian answered, gentle but insistent. He knew that Rosalynn was deliberately drawing a line between them, but he wouldn't just let her.

His words added fuel to the fire. He might as well have said the rumors were true.

Rosalynn glared at him, then turned around and walked to the stairs.
