Chapter: 1888
"Mom, do you really think I'm that naive?"
“Am I wrong?"
Bettie was at a loss for words. “You're overthinking it. Why on earth would he trick me?"
Then, in a softer tone, Bettie added, "Mom, he's promised that once we're married, he'll join my dad's company and help me make connections."
"Is that why you're with him?" Amirah, taken aback and concerned, pressed, "Bettie, please don't be foolish. I might not want to lose the company, but your happiness in marriage tops everything. Don't play games."
"No, mom. I'm with him because I really like him. Everyone is drawn to someone who stands out. He's truly amazing."
Amirah felt a wave of relief wash over her. "That's reassuring to hear."
“Mom, we're planning to get married next month."
“That quickly?" Amirah's eyes widened.
“Yes, we don't have much time. Erick is already in his second year of college."
"But isn't that a bit too soon?" Amirah couldn't hide her worry.
"You weren't being truthful with me just now, were you?"
"Why would I lie to you? The truth is, we've been together since last year, but I kept it from you. When Sabrina and I went to Orden earlier this year, he was there too."
A thought crossed Amirah's mind at Bettie's words. Glancing at Bettie's stomach, she whispered, “Bettie, you... Are you pregnant?"
Amirah believed that was the rush for getting married.
Bettie was at a loss for words. "Mom, what are you talking about? We... We always use protection," she stammered.
Lance and Bettie were twenty-six and had been in a relationship for a long time. It seemed far-fetched to think they hadn't been intimate.
Bettie added, “Don't worry. We're in love. Since we plan to marry eventually, why the delay? He will start working in my dad's company right after we get married. It's like hitting two targets with one arrow."
"I doubt your dad will be on board with that."
“I have asked Lance to come up with a reason to convince my dad. After that, we can both talk to Dad."
