Chapter: 1946
Back at her place, Sabrina uploaded the pics to the computer and settled in with Bettie on the sofa to check them out.
Bettie chuckled. "You're a wizard, Sabrina. How am I supposed to choose just thirty? They're all killer.”
"The photos are so beautifully harmonious, right?"
"Yep," Bettie agreed with a nod.
"These are your wedding shots with Lance."
Bettie turned to Sabrina, puzzled. "Huh?"
“Bettie, remember why you did this? It was to convince your parents that you and Lance are really an item."
Bettie pondered this. "Gotcha." She had almost forgotten the whole point of this photo gig, treating it like they were her actual wedding pics with Lance. She was too deep into the act. They hadn't even tied the knot yet, and she was already all in. It wasn't hard to see that after the wedding, Lance would have her wrapped around his finger. He was sneaky, always guiding her without her even realizing.
Thinking it over, Bettie decided. "I know what I'll do. I'll cut down on hanging out with Lance before the wedding.”
“That's not quite what I meant. I just hope that if you do reconcile with Lance, it's after some serious thinking, not in the middle of all this confusion," Sabrina suggested.
"Understood."
After leaving the police station, Rita sat in her car, lost in thought.
Minutes later, Rita's assistant rushed to the car, opening the passenger door. "Ma'am, got some news. The girl the cops brought in? She's Royce's niece, mixed up in some feud with Ms. Chavez and Miss Ramirez. Turns out she's the mastermind behind Miss Ramirez's abduction, but they caught onto her."
A long silence followed the assistant's update. Glancing at Rita, the assistant found her lost in contemplation, staring into the distance.
Knowing Rita's connection to Sabrina, the assistant figured she might be worried about Sabrina and reassured her, “Don't worry, ma'am. Ms. Chavez is fine."
Rita perked up, intrigued. “Wait. Did you say that girl is Royce's niece?"
Her assistant blinked, caught off guard, not sure why Rita was suddenly asking about someone else.
"Is she his actual niece?" Rita pressed.
The Nelson family had tons of wealth and power, with Royce having one biological sister and loads of cousins, some local and some abroad.
"I'm not totally sure," the assistant admitted. “But here's what I heard. The girl, Keilani, is mixed-race and seems to take after her mom more."
The assistant silently critiqued, noting how Keilani seemed to have taken after her mother more. From Keilani's looks, one wouldn't guess she had mixed heritage. She looked completely local.
