Chapter: 3967
He could see through Axell. Despite being with Jessie, Axell didn't turn down Debra. If riches rolled in, Axell might choose wealth over Jessie.
Albert tossed out casually, “I'll drop a billion bucks into the hospital if you tie the knot with Debra."
Axell was floored by the offer.
Axell felt a sting of insult. Once an intellect, now maneuvered like a puppet, his life dictated.
Coldly, Axell shot back, "Mr. Waston, you reckon money's the answer to everything?"
Albert's smile was wistful. "No. No amount of money can buy Jessie back. The more she adored me then, the more she despises me now."
Axell didn't want to hear any of their history.
After pondering, he began, "Mr. Waston, I want to make it clear that ..."
Albert flicked cigarette ash, smiling softly. "I'll have Joshua bump you up to VP of the hospital this month. Think about it. You'll be the youngest VP in Duefron's top private hospital. A bright future awaits."
Axell's face flushed with anger.
But he knew better than to refuse.
Albert had a hold on Axell's ambition.
Every man craved success.
ALL Axell had to do was nod, agree to marry Debra-who was gorgeous and utterly smitten with him.
It wasn't coercion; it was an opportunity.
Yet Axell's heart still leaned towards Jessie.
Axell remained silent, though Albert sensed his decision. Albert gave his shoulder a gentle pat and grinned. "Give me a buzz when you've made your call."
With that, Albert took off.
By the window, Axell burned through another half pack of smokes.
At ten that night, Axell dialed Jessie's number. Before she could speak, he murmured softly, "We're done.”
