Chapter: 4299
After a while, he tenderly reached for her pillow, discovering it moist with tears.
The following day, Leonel accompanied her to the doctor's office.
Following the diagnosis, the doctor confirmed Alexis' postpartum depression.
"Given Mrs. Douglas's history of autism, it's crucial to closely monitor her emotions during the postpartum period. While the issues may not be readily apparent on the surface, she may be silently grappling with negative emotions."
Their marriage had weathered significant trials.
The doctor was briefed on their history.
After careful consideration, the doctor proposed, "It's possible there are underlying issues she struggles to articulate, leading to a cycle of negative emotions. Mr. Douglas, this goes beyond mere psychological adjustment. For some patients with mental issues, self-regulation proves challenging; we must identify the triggers and let them out. At times, letting go may be the most viable options."
The doctor's words resonated within Leonel's thoughts.
Standing in the hospital corridor, he lit a cigarette with trembling fingers.
Leonel's features were blurred by the smoke's haze.
With half a cigarette left, Leonel caught distinct footsteps approaching. He pivoted, eyes tracing the sound.
There stood Marcus.
Two paces from Leonel, Marcus calmly spoke. “Have you got it now? Alexis has been to the doctor. She's been fine for ages but, since your return, she's fallen sick again. It's getting worse each time. You aren't her cure, Leonel. You're the problem. I know you won't quit. You fought hard for this shot. You always believe Alexis will return for the sake of the kids but you don't see that staying with you is what is tearing her apart. You left no room for her when you chose Anika, and neither did she for herself. I doubt Alexis will ever get past what you did to her. Leonel, I must ask, is the Alexis you love still there?"
With that, Marcus left coolly.
Sunlight flooded the corridor, the echo of leather shoes fading.
Leonel stood, solitary.
Deep down, he knew the truth.
Yet, he stubbornly yearned for another shot.
Leonel later found Alexis, sitting quietly in the hospital bench, as if expecting him.
He gazed at her, his eyes dark.
