Chapter: 4456
When he reached the location, it was four o'clock in the morning.
Countless lights pierced through the darkness of the night, illuminating the area.
Over a hundred individuals had already begun the search and rescue efforts. Rescue dogs were deployed, diligently sniffing around in search of any human scent. Leonel brought his car to a stop and swiftly jumped out of the car.
He retrieved his phone and dialed Alexis' number. Although the call connected, he couldn't hear her phone ringing on the other end.
"It's buried deep," remarked a seasoned rescuer.
Leonel stood before the collapsed building, encircled by a crowd.
Alongside the search and rescue teams, bystanders from the neighborhood had gathered to observe the scene, their murmurs creating a backdrop of whispered conversations.
"I heard his wife had an accident and is trapped beneath the rubble," one voice murmured.
"He seems well-off," another observed.
“They must be deeply in love. Sadly, she's likely too deep for survival. Even the dogs can't pick up her scent," someone speculated.
Leonel listened silently, his mind consumed by the single desire to locate Alexis. At that moment, he neither refuted nor argued with anyone around him.
He continued to dial Alexis' number.
Anxious for any sign of her, he dialed repeatedly until a voice cried out, “Over here! There's Light. It's a phone!"
Leonel rushed to the source.
A small, arched hollow on the building's left side marked the site of the collapsed stairs. A dim light emitted from six feet below-it was Alexis’ phone.
The rescue dogs had located Alexis. The rescue team leader's voice rang out, grave. “She's injured and bleeding."
He ordered the crane to be prepared for retrieval.
Leonel said softly, "I need to go in. My wife has a blood clotting disorder. It's been four hours. I have to try."
As Leonel gazed back at Sampson Reed, the leader of the rescue team, he remained resolute. "What if we drill in now and the top collapses again?" Sampson inquired, voicing a concern.
"Then I'll go down with her."
