Chapter: 2026
Three place settings?
Moss clearly hadn't dined alone. He couldn't have set the table for Bennett and him as the tableware already bore recent signs of use.
Holden's eyes landed on a black headband lying on the table. He had a sudden thought-had Ariana occupied one of the settings? Was Ariana here? If so, why didn't he see her?
Holden surveyed the room, finding no trace of Ariana. A surge of emotions swept through him.
Bennett also observed the tableware, his lips curving into a slight smile. He remained silent.
As Moss fetched new cutlery, Bennett pulled out a chair and seated himself .
Just as Moss returned, he heard Bennett conversing with Colt.
"Have a seat, Colt." Bennett gestured. Noticing Holden's hesitation, Bennett urged, "You must be tired and hungry now. Come, join us."
Holden's stomach growled in agreement, yet he didn't sit down, playing along with Bennett instead.
"I'm just a subordinate. It wouldn't be appropriate, would it?"
Holden said, feigning hesitation.
Bennett feigned a scowl. “What's the matter? So you are refusing to listen to me now?"
“I didn't mean that. It's just..." Holden paused, glancing at Moss, his intention clear.
He was seeking Moss’ opinion.
"Uncle Moss, my subordinate has been working tirelessly for a while now. Would you mind if he joined us for this meal?" Bennett asked, his eyes following Holden's gaze toward Moss.
Moss remained silent, seemingly indifferent to Bennett's request. He drank alone, his expression inscrutable, giving away nothing of his thoughts.
After a tense pause, Moss finally nodded, motioning for Holden to sit and join them for the meal.
Bennett's lips curled into a smile.
He knew Moss was always wary of outsiders. For example, the subordinate he had sent to Moss before had fallen into Moss' traps and passed his tests several times before Moss had finally trusted him.
As Holden settled into his seat, he started eating the delicious food before him.
