Chapter: 1326
But suddenly, a voice was heard!
“I have a problem."
When she heard that, Doris's eyes widened in surprise.
Four words hung in the air, uttered by none other than Maria, the one whom Mrs. Jenkins had persistently suppressed.
Doris felt a sudden surge of nervousness.
“What is there to fear? She... She is currently the least esteemed and most unpopular member of the Jenkins family!" Doris muttered to herself.
Those thoughts brought her a modicum of solace. She smiled at Maria and retorted, "Oh? Miss Maria, do you have an objection? Go ahead. Tell me."
Maria didn't beat around the bush and pointed directly at Barbara's name.
"The Jenkins family's internal competition has invited an outsider to partake. You just mentioned that it was Mrs. Jenkins' decision, duly sanctioned by the esteemed board of elders, correct?"
So, it was about that matter? The more Doris pondered, the more relieved she felt.
With raised eyebrows, she responded, "Indeed. Miss Maria, do you require a repetition of my previous statement? Or shall I arrange a meeting with the board of elders and Mrs. Jenkins herself for a face-to-face confirmation?"
The young members of the Jenkins family turned their attention toward
Maria.
Most were unacquainted with her, save for the knowledge that she possessed meager talents and came from a humble background, residing in the dilapidated Lemna Yard.
Some knew her as a renowned star in the outside world, a celebrated writer with a global following. Secretly, they had long been captivated by Maria's brilliance but could never muster the humility to approach her due to her lowly status.
“No, thanks," said Maria.
Doris assumed she was a timid soul, and just as she was about to mock her, Maria spoke once more.
"Since Mrs. Jenkins and the board of elders have reached such a decision, may I interpret it as ‘merit knows no bounds’? Meaning, if an outsider possesses exceptional talent, the Jenkins family would grant them a place of importance, correct?"
"Undoubtedly!" Doris raised her head and proclaimed, “Mrs. Jenkins possesses wisdom and discernment, unencumbered by inconsequential rules. She will do whatever to attract the very best."
Maria nodded. "Excellent. In that case, I would Like to recommend two individuals to the family who are not of Jenkins lineage. May I extend them an invitation to participate in the competition?”
"Well..." Hearing this, Doris was a bit taken aback.
She had not expected Maria to make such a request.
Publicly refusing would render Mrs. Jenkins’ claim of embracing talent null and void.
If she agreed... Agreeing would surpass Doris’ authority as a mere servant.
