Chapter: 1461
“Start the car immediately," Barbara ordered icily. She was not interested in explaining further to a mere servant.
“Understood.”
Reuben swiftly complied. He started the car's engine and set off toward the Jenkins family estate with the first light of dawn on the horizon.
An hour later, at the Jenkins family estate.
Within the inner hall where Mrs. Jenkins resided, the senior members of the Jenkins family had been convened.
Although Mrs. Jenkins had framed the gathering as a breakfast invitation, Canaan's instincts told him that something was amiss. That devious woman would rather dine with Doris than with the esteemed senior members of the Jenkins family.
Earlier this morning while Canaan was drinking a cup of water, he accidentally choked himself. It seemed to be an inauspicious omen.
Caught up in his thoughts and speculations, Canaan lost his appetite entirely. The lavish breakfast spread before him seemed unappealing.
“Why so contemplative, Canaan? Is the breakfast not to your Liking?" Hrs. Jenkins's voice abruptly broke the silence,
Startled, Canaan awkwardly chuckled, then picked up a bowl of porridge, preparing to take a spoonful.
However, the next words uttered by Mrs. Jenkins caused Canaan to lose his appetite entirely.
“I've been informed that Maria has betrayed the Jenkins family, causing us to lose hundreds of millions at the auction. What should we do about Maria according to our family's rules?" Mrs, Jenkins inquired.
No one, including Canaan, had expected this sudden change.
Canaan raised his head in horror to look at Mrs. Jenkins.
Barbara, who was sitting next to Mrs. Jenkins, was serving her food like a dutiful granddaughter.
“Grandma, this bamboo shoot with lily is crispy and delicious. Would you like to have a taste?" Barbara asked.
“Good, I'll have some," Mrs. Jenkins said with a smile and had a taste of the dish.
She slowly savored it in her mouth, Then, after swallowing, she looked up at Barbara and said, “Barbara, you have to remember. You should be as pure as this lily and never hide anything from the family."
Barbara nodded vigorously in response.
“Of course, grandma. I'll keep that in mind always. I will never let you down!"
Hearing this, Canaan almost recoiled in disgust. What kind of conversation was he listening to? How could such generous and righteous words come out of the mouths of these two wicked women?
Canaan looked at the bowl of porridge in his hand, which was made with his favorite vegetables and shrimp. But now, after what he had just heard, he had lost his appetite.
He put the bowl back down on the table and asked in a low voice, "Well since you just mentioned Maria... What mistake did she make this time?"
Naria had tricked the Jenkins family and caused them to lose hundreds of millions of dollars? It was obvious that Mrs. Jenkins wanted to use the family rules as an excuse to punish Maria.
