Chapter: 1629
Julie decided then and there to learn the basics of cooking and impress Maria with her newfound skills.
Lost in her thoughts, Julie didn't notice Maria peeking over her shoulder at the food on the table.
The charred food was supposed to be steaks. The steamed eggs in the big bowl had collapsed, looking like soggy bread.
Then, there was the fried cabbage, bright green but clearly undercooked.
"Maria, um... Let's not eat this. How about we order take-out or dine out instead?"
Julie's cheeks reddened with embarrassment when her phone unexpectedly rang.
She glanced at the caller ID and her expression shifted to a slight frown. Hesitantly, she ended the call without answering.
Out of the corner of her eye, Maria had noticed the name ‘Ian' flashing on the screen.
"Mom, is Professor Navarro trying to reach you about something?"
Maria inquired, her curiosity piqued.
Holding an important position as the deputy head of Sophie's research institute, Ian was also a key figure in the development of hibernation pod technology.
He had previously overseen the upkeep and data monitoring of Nathias's hibernation pod, which was under the care of the Smith family. Following Mathias's demise, Ian had returned to the institute to concentrate on his research.
Given Ian's long-standing friendship with Julie, it wasn't a surprise for Maria that they were in contact.
Caught off guard, Julie struggled to find the right words.
“Ah, yes, Ian..." Julie stammered, her eyes sparkling with a mix of emotions.
Over time, Ian had become more than just a friend to her.
Although Ian, a man deeply rooted in science, lacked the typical flair and romance of an academic, he was known for his dedication, sincerity, and dependability. These were the traits that Julie valued highly.
Julie admired Ian, but her recent breakup with Bill and devotion to taking care of Maria left little room for her to consider her own romantic life.
A while back, her brother Cory casually mentioned a retired private hospital director who was interested in her. Julie didn't take it to heart at the time. It only hit her then how Ian felt about her.
"Mom, I think Professor Navarro is still single," Maria suddenly chimed in.
Panicked, Julie replied, “Maria, listen... I promise, I won't do anything that'll embarrass you!"
The thought of starting a new family at her age troubled Julie. What would Maria think about that? Julie's thoughts were all over the place.
"Mom, you've got it all wrong. I suppose he's a decent guy. My only worry is that he's never been married. If he slips up, try to be understanding, okay?" Maria said.
"Alright, I'll take your advice... Wait, what did you just say?"
