Chapter: 1675
Startled by the noise, Barbara looked back. Her eyes widened in shock at the sight of a large group of people who were walking toward them.
An old man was leading the group. Barbara didn't know who this old man was. However, she recognized Canaan who followed the old man closely.
Barbara was puzzled. What on earth was going on?
Canaan had a high status in the Jenkins family, second only to Mrs. Jenkins.
Who then was this old man? Why did Canaan and other elders of the Jenkins family willingly walk behind him?
Mrs. Jenkins suddenly stood up with a swift, surprising movement. She straightened her back in a way that defied her senior age.
"Grandma, you..." Barbara's voice trailed off in astonishment.
Realizing her unusual agility, Mrs. Jenkins slowly bent her back again and gasped for breath, as though the exertion had taken its toll.
“What are you doing? Who was he?" Barbara's voice was sharp as she pointed at the old man walking ahead.
The old man paid Barbara no mind. With a gesture from Canaan, two security guards from the Jenkins family moved quickly to apprehend Barbara.
Despite her proficiency in ancient martial arts, Barbara was at a disadvantage. In fact, the two security guards were the top figures of the Jenkins' security team. Their expertise in physical combat surpassed Barbara's skills, leaving Barbara with no chance of resistance.
“Grandma, help me! What's happening? Are they rebelling?" Barbara cried out in confusion and fear.
Mrs. Jenkins, however, remained silent. Her expression darkened as she sat down. She fixed her gaze on the old man leading the group and, after a long pause, asked in a deliberate tone, "Who... Who are you?"
The old man remained silent, his gaze sharp and penetrating as he looked at Mrs. Jenkins, seemingly seeing through her very essence.
“Interesting! You don't recognize him? Despite his long absence, no one in our Jenkins family dares claim ignorance of Denis, an elder and the former family's head's right-hand man!" Canaan's words were laden with anger and hostility directed squarely at Mrs. Jenkins.
"Oh?" Mrs. Jenkins' eyes flickered with a hint of coldness.
"So, Denis, you've decided to return to our family? You disappeared for twenty years. We didn't know whether you had run away or were already dead. Why choose today to reappear after such a lengthy silence?" Her response was sharp, a direct challenge to Denis’ intentions.
However, Mrs. Jenkins seemed to overlook the fact that Denis, along with Clark, held nearly as much authority as the former head of the Jenkins family. Her approach, effective with Canaan, might not sway Denis.
Denis began, “Back then, a conflict that shook the world of martial arts loomed because of the foreign powers. Clark and I, under the old master's leadership, led our family's elite to confront it. Time has indeed flown. It's been twenty years." He spoke with a voice deep and resonant, like distant thunder, emanating a formidable presence.
Upon hearing his reminiscence, Mrs. Jenkins couldn't help but feel a tinge of disdain. She overlooked an important detail. Had Denis and Clark not vanished but instead returned in time, she would never have had the chance to run the family.
Denis and Clark held a stature that made them prime candidates for the family's leadership.
"Denis, you mean to say that during the war defending Highwyn, when our Jenkins family was fiercely engaged, you and Clark disappeared midway? This led to the demise of many of our elite and left our master gravely wounded. In his final moments, he named me his successor.
Now that you have returned, should I enforce our family's laws and judge your past actions to honor the spirits of our fallen heroes?
“Mrs. Jenkins' tone became icy.
