Entertainment companies would only sign newcomers for one of two reasons. The first reason was that this person had a rich or powerful background, and many resources to back them. In this case, the entertainment company wouldn't have to invest too much on cultivating them. Signing a contract with such a person was mutually beneficial for the company.

The second reason was that the newcomer had a good appearance and temperament. It was common for entertainment companies to sign a Lot of newcomers this way and support all of them with whatever resources were available. Then, as long as one or a few of them became popular, the company would get high returns.

When the company was low on capital, it would retain these new artists with the minimum wage, which was less than what an ordinary office worker earned.
