Chapter: 639
Sophie paused for a while to collect her thoughts and phrase them coherently.
"There are two big problems when it comes to the technique of hibernation. I'm sure you can figure them out by yourself.
The first problem is the question of how to preserve the human body in time. The second problem is that the longer the duration of preservation has to be, the more difficult the technique of hibernation is.
When the idea of hibernation first came about, the concept of freezing was agreed on almost immediately as the best method for preserving the human body in time.
But the problem was how long the duration could be. With our research. we've managed to increase that duration from one second to one minute, to one hour, and now half a day!"
With every word Sophie spoke, her voice rose with excitement.
It was truly an amazing feat.
Maria couldn't help but gasp.
“You... developed a technology that can make people go into hibernation for half a day?"
"Well, to be exact, for eight hours—the normal amount of sleep that a human being needs.”
If an ordinary people heard this, they might think that Sophie's achievement was meaningless.
She could make a person go into hibernation for eight hours, but the normal duration of sleep was also for eight hours. What was the difference?
However, Sophie didn't have to explain anything to Maria; she knew that the latter would grasp the gravity of what she was saying.
After a short silence, Maria asked in awe, “How long is the interval between each hibernation?"
Sophie snapped her fingers on the other end of the line. "You're smart! That's the key. The interval is 12 hours.
Maria couldn't believe her ears.
“So you're saying that we can make people spend every day in hibernation?”
"Yes!"
Maria was satisfied.
This technology of hibernation could indeed prolong Mathias's life. Mathias’ problem was that at his old age, his organs were declining, and would soon reach the end of life.
But if the technique of hibernation was used, the organs which would normally age 24 hours in a day would only age for 16 hours.
In the remaining 8 hours, while Mathias was hibernating, his organs would not age at all. They would just be frozen in time.
That meant that with the technique of hibernation, Mathias's remaining lifespan could be increased by 33%.
Maria told Julie everything about Sophie's research institute and what they had achieved, except, of course, for the fact that she was the prime investor of the said institute.
