Chapter: 2069
"You realized your secret would come out eventually, so you explained why you left seven years ago while we were in Hailand. Was that part of your plan too? Would you have told me even if I hadn't asked?"

"True."

"If you knew I'd find out eventually, why didn't you just come clean and hope I'd forgive you then?"

"If I had told you the truth, you'd suspect I only did it because I was worried Jennie would spill it. That's no different from what's happening now." Lance had considered confessing, but he and Bettie were having such a great time in Hailand. They were traveling, dining, and sharing a bed, just like a real couple. He couldn't bring himself to ruin that.

"Jennie seems keen to help you keep this secret. Why not just maintain the secrecy, but have her tell me the truth instead?"

“She shouldn't be dragged into our issues." Lance had thought about it. If Bettie discovered the truth later, she would surely think poorly of Jennie for keeping it hidden. The longer he withheld the truth, the more damage it would cause.

"I never took you for such a good uncle," Bettie commented sarcastically with a smile. "Do your parents know our wedding was based on an arrangement?"

"My father is aware. My mother only knows we had a wedding, not that there was an arrangement.”

"Do they know the grudge between me and Keilani?"

"Yes."

"Really? What's their take on it?"

“My father has already known about us. The person who took you bungee jumping was actually his secretary. He knew I was pursuing you but pinned the blame on me anyway. However, he arranged for Jennie to be taken away to give me a clear path. My mother adores Keilani, but she's also interested in keeping us together. That's why she pushed for me to bring you to Philade."

After a pause, Lance added, “Those are their perspectives, but honestly, their opinions don't matter. What's important is my own choice. Bettie, I want to be with you, and nobody can change that."

"What if Keilani still harbors resentment toward me once she's released from jail?"

"I'll send her back to Philade. She won't be allowed to return. Consider it a warning. If she doesn't change her ways, I'll handle it myself."

“What if your parents and uncle stand up for her?"

Lance took a step closer and said earnestly, "If I'm not certain, I won't return to see you, Bettie."

"Well, I've exhausted my questions, Mr. Carter. Oh, wait, Mr. Wilson."

Bettie gave Lance an indifferent look and turned away to go upstairs.

Lance sighed deeply. At least she hadn't ripped up the agreement and drove him away. “Bettie, what would you like for lunch? I can have the maid prepare something for you."
