Chapter: 2012
"Let's not dwell on this right now," she suggested, gesturing dismissively. "Our priority is to find a way out."
Adrian nodded in agreement.
They approached the keypad again. Adrian attempted the code once more but failed, setting off the alarm, which blared even louder than before, causing them to wince and cover their ears.
"Hide!" Ariana pulled Adrian away.
The scientist had not appeared after the initial alarm, yet it was uncertain if he would neglect this one.
After what felt like an eternity, the alarm finally ceased. Ariana, who had been crouching, stumbled backward, but Adrian caught her just in time.
"Are you okay?" Adrian asked, his tone laced with concern.
"Yeah, I'm okay," Ariana replied, though she didn't feel so good.
Adrian noted her discomfort and grew even more resolved to escape with Ariana.
"Just hang in there; we'll get out soon," Adrian reassured Ariana as they approached the keypad once again. He said, “If he didn't show up after two alarms, maybe this alarm system is just a bluff. I'll try some different combinations."
With that plan in mind, Adrian focused on the keypad, tuning out the persistent beeps. He tested various sequences using the numbers from 1 to 6, but each attempt was met with failure.
As his frustration mounted, Adrian felt a sudden tap on his shoulder.
Expecting it was Ariana, he responded without turning, "Just a bit longer; I think I'm on the verge of cracking it. Hang on."
When no response followed, Adrian was puzzled. Looking up, he saw Ariana a few feet away, her eyes filled with terror, looking at something behind him.
Realization dawned on him; the tap hadn't come from Ariana.
Adrian slowly turned around, only to find the house's owner standing there, drenched in blood and holding a chainsaw.
When Ariana and Adrian unexpectedly saw the mad scientist in blood, they were so astounded that they couldn't muster a reaction.
It appeared more like a scene ripped from a horror film, far from what one would anticipate in the real world.
Slowly regaining her wits, Ariana blinked and glanced at Adrian, her eyes wide with uncertainty, silently querying what they should do next. It seemed Adrian was on the brink of asking her the same question.
"You're asking me? I was about to ask you the same thing!" Ariana whispered, her voice trembling, barely holding back tears.
