Chapter: 1093
The forum proceeded with Gary asking another professor called Channing to handle the next question.
Lyman returned the microphone to the host, and the professor peered at the guests. "okay..."
Professor Channing, being of old age, was already suffering a poor eyesight.
He stood on his shaky legs and leaned forward to scan the audience sitting in the Last row. When his gaze Landed on Maria, it lingered for a few seconds.
Would he pick Maria? Vivian frowned. "No, come on! Please move on, don't let her get so Lucky!" she screamed inside her head.
Her prayers were soon answered.
As soon as Professor Channing got a good look of Maria's face, he averted his eyes. In the end, he chose Shera, who was sitting right next to Lyman.
Shera was elated, of course, and she hurriedly reached for the microphone.
While disappointed, Maria had no choice but to pass the microphone on to her.
“Professor Channing, it is my greatest pleasure to be granted this opportunity. My question is actually a follow-up to the previous one. If there really are aliens out there, will they be friendly or hostile to humans?"
It was a fascinating question, indeed.
The director silently nodded, satisfied with Shera's quick thinking. After the matter of the aliens' existence, this was what the audience would most Likely want to know.
On the stage, Professor Channing turned somber. He paused, seemingly in hesitation. After much consideration, he slowly spoke. "Since the human race had never made contact with them, we have no practical experience of their cultures, ethics, or values. We don't even know if these exist in their worlds at all.
Having said that, there has never been a shortage of discussions and speculations over the years. Unfortunately, we can only use our own cultures, our own values, our own perception of justice, and ethics and morality, to ascertain whether the aliens are friendly or hostile."
Professor Channing paused again, and the crowd held their breath.
“However, after much conversation and analysis over this topic, reason has guided us to the most probable conclusion. We all agreed that once the aliens come into contact with humans, their attitude toward us will completely depend on the Level of development the human civilization has achieved at that point.
That is the only thing we can say for sure."
“The humans were like this, too, a long time ago. Take, for example, the era of navigation, the exploration of the new world. At that time, a merchant and a pirate were practically one and the same. Once a ship arrives at a previously undiscovered land, the state of the local natives will decide the sailors' identity and intent.
If the local civilization is weak, the sailors become pirates who plunder all the valuable resources the continent has to offer. They violate anything and anyone they can, and destroyed that which they find useless. As a result, the ancient culture and traditions of the locals are effectively wiped out, their lives shattered in an unadulterated act of greed.
However, if the local civilization happens to be powerful and well-established, the sailors will claim to be tradesmen, or preachers, doctors, some renowned scholar, or perhaps a wealthy aristocrat. Instead of violence, they use cunning to wheedle their way into the natives' Lives and manipulate them into trading their resources for far less than their actual worth."
Everyone in the audience, including the cast and crew of "My College Life", collectively felt a shiver run down their spines.
Shera, on the other hand, was frowning in indignation.
Those "pirates" that the professor had just referred to were pioneers and predecessors that she had looked up to since she was young. Even the places they had visited throughout history had become her target destinations as well.
Needless to say, she took offense to the way the professor had described them.
