Chapter: 1212
She was quite close to the matriarch of the family, so no one had dared to challenge her.
Naturally, Cyril had to treat her with respect.
“Well, I shall confirm it for myself."
As Doris spoke, her eyes swept a quick glance over the people who were standing beside their respective cars
Her gaze was sharp and laden with judgment, making some of the guests squirm from where they stood.
In fact, they were all uncomfortable with Doris’ attitude, but no one was brave enough to speak up.
Doris' eyes darted back and forth, as if she was looking for something in particular.
Finally, her gaze Landed on a luxury SUV at the very end of the Line of vehicles.
Her eyes gleamed with admiration and greed as she took in the sight.
“Hold on," she frowned, snapping back to her senses. "Where is Miss Maria Jenkins? And, Cyril, what is up with that flashy car? Did you embezzle funds from public affairs or what? How could you rent a Luxury car on a whim?"
Cyril opened his mouth to refute Doris, but he didn't know what to say. It was true that he was a car enthusiast, and those who were familiar with him were aware of this.
But he had nothing to do with the SUV. It was way above his pay grade, and even if he could somehow afford to rent it, he wouldn't even know where to find one.
"Doris," he stammered awkwardly. "I-This car... This is Miss Maria Jenkins' car. She drove it over."
“Really? Is she still in the car, then? How come she's not even getting out to greet me?" Doris deliberately raised her voice, so that it carried over to the SUV. Clearly, she was trying to goad Maria to alight from the vehicle.
As the head servant of the Jenkins family, she had been assigned to serve these relatives who had come from far and wide.
Her duties entailed briefing them about the family situation, familiarizing them with the mansion, arranging their meals and daily activities, and so on.
As it was, however, she had grown used to enjoying the authority lent to her by virtue of her affiliation with the family matriarch.
And she had no qualms about using it to her advantage, even against the lesser members of the Jenkins family.
When Maria still didn't get out of the car, Doris repeated her complaints, in a much louder voice this time.
"Doris," Cyril said in a somewhat frantic tone. "I'm afraid Miss Maria is asleep. She seems to be suffering from a rare type of narcolepsy. I only just found out today. Though, I also heard that she has been coping well, Lately, and her bouts of sleep have become rare.”
Doris froze. For a moment, she was rendered speechless. "She's asleep?" She wasn't about to let it stand, but upon sensing everyone's eyes on her, she cleared her throat and got down to business.
She couldn't afford to delay it any Longer.
“Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to congratulate you on your return to the family. I am here to welcome you and teach you the rules that the Jenkins live by.
Now, everyone, I would like you to listen carefully to everything I'm about to say!"
