Chapter: 1958
Jennie agreed, a slight frown indicating her need, “Yes, I do."
She hopped off her chair, grasped Sabrina's hand, and they both made their way out.
This particular KFC didn't have an in-house restroom, prompting Sabrina to guide Jennie following the signs to the mall's communal restrooms, which were relatively empty.
The wash area was shared between genders.
Jennie, done before Sabrina, was on her tiptoes, reaching to wash her hands.
When Jennie heard the adjacent faucet open, she caught a glimpse of a man beside her. After shutting off her tap, she took a closer look and noticed an elderly foreign gentleman.
He was observing her. With his prominent features and greying temples, he smiled at Jennie and initiated a conversation, “What's your name, young lady?"
His question came in a language not her own.
Jennie, scanning the bustling crowd, looked back at him, blinked, and replied in the same foreign language, “I'm Jennie."
“Jennie? that's a lovely name. Do you know who I am?" he inquired further.
Jennie gave a negative nod.
Just then, Sabrina emerged from the restroom. Spotting Jennie chatting with an unfamiliar older foreigner, she promptly called out, "Jennie".
“Hey, Sabrina." Jennie grinned at the elderly man and willingly approached Sabrina.
The elderly man's gaze shifted from Jennie to Sabrina, his expression turning distant and sharp, as he scrutinized Sabrina from head to toe, his piercing gaze impossible to ignore.
Sabrina, unfazed, washed her hands.
Sabrina then guided Jennie away, offering a friendly smile to the man as they departed from the restroom area.
Jennie's gaze shifted between Sabrina and the restroom, catching the elderly man's eye as he emerged, observing their departure.
When the elderly man offered a smile, Jennie looked away, deep in thought.
Jennie found the man's approach peculiar. Typically, when one was in a foreign land, learning simple greetings in the local dialect was common. However, this man chose to inquire about her name in a foreign tongue, not pausing to think if a child would grasp it.
His lack of surprise at her understanding hinted at an expectation of familiarity. It was as if the man had some prior knowledge of her.
