Chapter: 1988
Seeking a quiet corner, Jennie dialed Tyrone's number.
As the call connected, Kaleb swiftly placed his coffee down and suggested, "Make sure it's on Loudspeaker."
Tyrone cast a glance at Kaleb and, with a hint of annoyance, activated the speakerphone feature. “Hello, Jennie."
“Hi Tyrone, what's up?" Jennie's voice filled the room, causing Kaleb to give Tyrone a look of triumph. It seemed Jennie wasn't that close to Tyrone after all. She didn't even refer to him as dad.
"Would you like to visit Philade with your grandfather?" Tyrone got straight to the point.
Jennie had declined the offer just the day before. She assumed if Tyrone was against the idea, he wouldn't have called to inquire again.
Presumably, Kaleb had swayed Tyrone, who now hoped she'd reconsider.
Wishing not to trouble Tyrone further, Jennie replied, "Yes."
Tyrone was taken aback by her answer, casting a glance at Kaleb.
A knowing smile spread across Kaleb's face.
“Jennie, Just to be sure, do you really want to go? If you're hesitant, just let me know," Tyrone probed once more.
To Jennie, Tyrone's words meant he hoped she'd visit but also seemed concerned about her feelings. Hence, she affirmed, "Dad, I genuinely wish to go. Plus, Sabrina will be in Philade. It'll be fun to be with her."
Tyrone found himself at a loss for words. He felt the urge to ask about the reason behind the sudden change of heart. Why was she eager today when she was hesitant yesterday? Had he become the unwelcome figure in this situation, only to be struck by his own daughter's whim?
Kaleb's expression briefly tightened upon hearing Jennie address Tyrone as "Dad," but soon, a joyful smile returned at Jennie's wish to visit Philade. Jennie's last remarks about Sabrina went entirely unnoticed by him.
As Tyrone seemed ready to speak further, Kaleb intervened. “Okay, Jennie, we've sorted it out. You're free to go play now."
Jennie, hearing Kaleb, hesitated a moment, "So... Dad, I'm going to hang up."
Tyrone remained silent. What more was there to say?
The click of the call ending resonated through the speaker.
Kaleb, wearing a grin of triumph, took a leisurely sip of his coffee and faced Tyrone. “There you have it, Mr. Blakely. Jennie is eager to visit Philade with me."
Kaleb paused, his look turning intense. “Should you try to meddle again, I won't hold back in our confrontation."
