Chapter: 1916
Meanwhile, Sonia slowly opened her eyes. Her mind was cloudy, her vision hazy. Her waist and abdomen felt numb and weak.
As she blinked, her vision cleared, and suddenly, Maxwell's stunning face appeared remarkably close to hers.
Sonia's mind wasn't clear yet. She looked at Maxwell, thinking she must be dreaming.
She closed her eyes again and counted to three in her mind. She silently prayed that if she was guilty of anything, God would let the law judge her and not let some greedy capitalist appear the moment she opened her eyes.
After giving herself a mental pep talk, she opened her eyes again.
But still, the first thing she saw in front of her was Maxwell's face.
Sonia looked at Maxwell blankly. It turned out she was not dreaming at all.
When Sonia had closed her eyes, Maxwell had actually thought she had fallen asleep again. So, when he saw her open her eyes again, he was visibly pleased. He said, "You're finally awake! And for that, I won't deduct your salary for your absences. I'll even give you a bonus to cheer you up."
Sonia couldn't help rolling her eyes. The happy smile on Maxwell's face made her feel resigned.
She had barely escaped from the jaws of death. Salaries and bonuses were the last things on her mind now.
But she also noticed that Maxwell's good mood was genuine. Was he really happy to see her awake?
Sonia wasn't sure about it. But she must admit that his cheerfulness was strangely contagious. She didn't even realize she was already smiling.
Sonia wanted to give Maxwell a piece of her mind. But when she opened her mouth to speak, her throat was so dry that she couldn't even make a sound.
She cleared her throat while Maxwell kept chattering about celebrating her recovery with a salary increase and how her work had been recently.
Sonia was not in the mood to listen, so she ignored him. She tried to move her fingers, and she suddenly felt a sharp pain in her waist and abdomen. Her legs were numb. Moreover, her body felt so heavy that she couldn't move at all.
What was happening?
Sonia panicked at once. She was so anxious that her heart raced.
Was she paralyzed? Was she disabled?
But hadn't she only been shot in the abdomen? Why couldn't she feel anything in her lower body?
Sonia's panic grew. She tried to speak, but she could only let out a whimper, She felt so scared that she couldn't help crying.
