Chapter: 166
After removing her sleep mask, she scowled and questioned, "Darren makes tens of millions of dollars a year, and his followers are located all over the globe. Just how could he be pathetic? I‘11 show you what really destitute people are Like by taking you to a poor mountain region, believe it or not."
Shock swept through Jenny. Maria was just too skilled of a debater for her own good.
"Then... Maria, can you at least tell me how you and Darren know one other?"
Jenny didn't really anticipate a response from Maria.
After all, this was supposed to be something personal. Surely Maria wouldn't be that revealing.
Surprisingly, Maria was forthright with her!
"We used to hang out at the same cafe often and play games a few years back. Wasteland's beta version had just been released at the time. It was via this game that I knew him."
Not believing it, Jenny said, “Is that all? But then why would he address you as Master Maria?"
“He was a newbie back then, and the zombies kept him continually on the run. Since I felt sorry for him, I gave him sanctuary in my fortification.”
“Master Darren... A newbie, huh? He was on the run and hunted by the zombies, you say?"
It was inconceivable to Jenny. After all, Darren had long established himself as Wasteland's top player.
Suddenly, something occurred to Jenny. She expressed shock by saying, “This is obviously not conceivable. The defensive base module was developed during the last two years. Since you were the one who played the first version of Wasteland, it would be impossible to construct a fortification for defenses then."
The original Wasteland simply had players using natural features Like caves, pits, and even tree holes to hide from the undead.
Maria made no comments and simply looked at Jenny calmly. The message in her eyes was obvious: “Do you think I'm lying?”
Jenny was sulking and arguing.
“Stone Age is another name for the primordial Wasteland. Players armed themselves with sticks, stone axes, and other such items as their weapons. It usually took a group of two or three people working together to take down a zombie. More than two zombies would force the players to seek cover in tree holes and caves. You can only guess how backward the first Wasteland society was. With the upgrade of the game, there went what we later called the Iron Age. For the first time, players could construct strongholds and arm themselves with bows, spears, and other cold weapons. They were finally able to resist in the face of the onslaught of small groups of zombies. Thanks to the efforts of key players like Darren, the Wasteland community has advanced into the modern day. Players can finally craft cutting-edge weaponry to fend against the hordes of zombies."
Maria remained silent while Jenny explained Wasteland's background. As she flipped over on the couch, she muttered, "Hmm." in a drowsy tone.
Seriously, Jenny said, “Maria, please refrain from boasting about it going forward when you interact with other Wasteland gamers. Human-made defensive base modules were practically nonexistent in the primordial version of this game. Caves ad pits were the sole safe haven from the zombie hordes."
After she was done speaking, she heard Maria make a sluggish sound of slumber.
Maria dozed off! Jenny could not have been more irritated. And she had to take a few deep breaths to calm herself down.
